For more than half a centeury I have been professionally a theologian. But essentially I am a philosopher in the socratic sense of being unable to avoid questioning whatever I find other people taking for granted. This applies equally to the exponents of new ideas and to the champions of old. My professional studies are thus the work of a socratic philosopher doing theology. I have called this boook "An Enquiry" because, again like Socrates, to many of the questions I not only don`t know the answers, but I know that I don`t know them.
