This book seems to me the most important I have written. It shows what I have learned through the study of preaching, and how my thinking on the subject has changed. For ten years and more I approached homiletics as a science; through another decade or so I investigated preaching as an art; for about ten years I have been engaged in the study of sermons. Now I look on this last as most nearly ideal, because it combines the advantages of the other two approaches and avoids most of their weaknesses. If fixes attention on preparing for the pulpit, not on the theory of preaching or on the personality of the preacher.
